The Smokey Mountain 500 (or SM500) Audio Guide is intended to be used along side The Smokey Mountain 500 GPX Route.  Created by rider Andy Simons, the SM500 is a legendary 500-mile loop designed for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles but can also be done in 4wd rigs. It winds through the rugged terrain of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, crossing through North Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina.  The SM500 has become a "bucket list" staple for East Coast ADV riders due to its perfect blend of scenic pavement and "big-bike friendly" dirt.

The Route at a GlanceDistance: Approximately 500 miles (loop).

Duration: Typically ridden in over 3 days (roughly 160 miles per day).

Terrain Mix: About 70% paved and 30% unpaved.

Surface Types: It features everything from world-class "twisties" (pavement) to well-maintained gravel forest service roads, with a few technical "hero" sections featuring water crossings and loose rock.

Why It’s Famous:  The SM500 is beloved because it doesn't just stick to the dirt; it intentionally links some of the best riding roads in the country. Highlights often included or nearby the route include:  The Cherohala Skyway: A sweeping, high-altitude paved ridge ride.  The Dragon (US-129): Though often a detour, many riders hit these 318 curves while on the loop.  Witt Road: The most "infamous" section of the trail, known for its multiple water crossings that can range from ankle-deep to "bike-swallowing" depending on recent rainfall.  Forest Service Roads: Long stretches of canopy-covered gravel through the Chattahoochee and Nantahala National Forests.

Skill Level & GearThe "Big Bike" Factor: The SM500 is considered big-bike friendly, meaning a skilled rider on a BMW GS or KTM 1290 can complete it. However, the water crossings and occasional muddy ruts can be a handful for heavy machines.

Best Time to Ride: Late Spring (for wildflowers) or Mid-Fall (for the foliage). Summer can be extremely humid, and winter weather in the gaps is unpredictable.

Logistics: The loop is self-guided via GPX tracks. Popular "base camps" for starting the loop include Suches, GA (Two Wheels of Suches), Tellico Plains, TN, or Iron Horse Lodge in NC.
